Some people have never been harmed by a dental operation, but they are always scared of the prospect of going to see a dentist. They delay their dental appointments because people are afraid of the dentist and this causes them to experience greater amounts of tooth pain and injury. If you are scared of dentist appointments, then there are some things you can do to help resolve these fears.

Make an appointment for a quick meet and greet with a family dentistry clinic. Go into the office and get to know the employees, the way they do things, the clinic layout, and when you need to make an appointment to have dental work done, you would feel more relaxed.

Tell the dentist about your worries and they will give you something before the operation to relax your nerves.

See the dentist more regularly. If you just visit the dentist when you are in pain, then dental procedures are associated with pain. You will be less scared if you make appointments to see the dentist for daily cleanings and check-ups because you will know that the dentist chair does not always mean discomfort.

When you go to the dentist, take someone with you so that you feel healthy. Take a member of your family or a friend who makes you feel comfortable, so you don’t feel like you’re in the office alone. When the dentist is ready to see you, tell the receptionist you want your friend or family member to go back with you.

Have the dentist authorise you to touch the equipment they are going to use. If you are able to touch the drill, you can feel it and be less afraid of it.

When the dentist is operating on your teeth, wear earphones and listen to music. Tell the dentist you’re going to do this so that if they need to ask you a question, they can get your attention, but listening to music you like can calm you and help minimise the amount of fear you are in.
