King Bio's Poison Ivy / Poison Oak Review

Poison ivy, oak, and sumac rashes are caused by the reaction that most people have to an oil called urushiol, secreted by the plants. Urushiol on the skin won't have an immediate effect, because it does not cause a reaction on the skin's surface – instead, it is absorbed into the skin, and the allergic reaction takes place where you can't see it. Blood vessels close to the surface will expand and leak, and this is what causes the appearance of the rash commonly known as poison oak or poison ivy rash. It will be red and bumpy in appearance, often with fluid-filled blisters or “weeping” sores which can be quite painful. There may be a burning sensation because of the irritation caused to the skin. But by far the most common and severe symptom of urushiol-induced contact dermatitis is itching, which can often be quite difficult to endure.

This is why you should take every precaution possible against developing poison ivy/oak rash. Familiarize yourself with the plants so that you can recognize and avoid them. If you do accidentally come into contact with them, then respond quickly so that you can try to remove the urushiol from the skin's surface before it can soak in and cause a reaction. There are lots of products available to assist with this, from lotions to wipes, and it's sensible to keep some in a convenient place so that you'll be able to treat your skin immediately.

If you can manage to get rid of all the oil, then the rash should be prevented. But even if some urushiol has been absorbed by the skin, you still need to remove all oil from the surface of your skin so that you don't spread it, and so that you can minimize the severity of the reaction.

Once you have taken all preventative measures – including thorough cleaning of not just your skin but also any object (tools, clothing, even pet fur!) which may have urushiol on it – you can also take precautions against any urushiol that is now in your system. Try something like King Bio's Poison Ivy/Oak Relief, which can be used preventatively in either oral or topical doses.
