A dentist, also called a dental hygienist, is a qualified medical professional who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral diseases and conditions. The dentist’s team helps in providing complete oral healthcare services. The scope of work of a dentist includes prevention of tooth decay, dental maintenance and treatments and the treatment and prevention of oral infections and diseases. A dentist combines advanced technology, art and wisdom to provide pain-free dental care. Dental science has made significant advances in recent years and new techniques have been developed to address many of the issues that existed before. Learn more about Asha Dental.

Oral care is essential to a healthy mouth and it should be done on a regular basis. Regular brushing twice a day, flossing and using mouthwash can help keep your teeth healthy. A good dentist will use preventative methods and advise you against bad habits such as smoking, excessive drinking alcohol, or using illegal drugs. Smoking restricts oxygen flow to the gums and causes premature aging of the teeth. Alcohol increases the sensitivity of the tooth, causes swollen gums and allows bacteria to grow, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.

A person who wishes to practice dentistry must attend a dental school for at least four years. During dental school a person learns how to give treatments to patients of all ages and how to perform dental procedures such as extractions, filling, root canal treatment and tooth cleaning. To become a dentist one must pass an oral exam and also participate in a licensed practice dentistry residency for three years. After passing the oral exam and undergoing the residency, a dentist may take the board exam which will allow him or her to practice dentistry in his or her state. A dentist may work in his or her state for two years then switch to another state.
