Leather is classified into three categories, namely Top grain, Middle grain, and Flat grain. All three grades of leather are derived from the natural characteristics of the hide, i.e., the grains of the outer layer and the interiors of the hide. Leather is considered to be a natural product because it possesses all the attributes of a hide; i.e., flexibility, pliability, resistance to all kinds of stress, and strength.

Amongst the different kinds of leather, the most commonly used is full grain leather which is regarded as the highest quality and often used to produce high quality belts, shoes, bags, and other accessories. It possesses all the qualities mentioned above and is often used to manufacture belts, bags, and shoes. Apart from these, there are two other categories of leather, namely, split-grain leather and top grain leather. Split-grain leather is characterized by the presence of many scars or pitted marks on the outer surface of the hide, whereas, top grain leather possesses evenly distributed and fine-grained surfaces. There are some other varieties of leather as well that may be used to manufacture accessories, such as suede and nappa stretch leather belts and wallets.
